So, who is The Sour Moose?
The Sour Moose is a family-run candy shop in Tofield, Alberta, opened in 2023 by Christina, a mom of four who grew up in Northern Ontario and eventually found her way to rural Alberta.
The idea came after a workplace accident forced a pretty major change of plans. Christina wanted to build something of her own, and some of her best childhood memories kept coming back to her: independently owned small-town stores where you knew who was behind the counter, and her grandmother's candy jar that always seemed to have something good in it.
So, naturally, she opened a candy store.
The good stuff.
The goal was never to fill a shop with the same candy you can find everywhere else. The fun is in finding the weird stuff, the nostalgic stuff, the really good stuff and the "I have absolutely no idea what this is, but we're ordering it" stuff.
Today you'll find everything from Scandinavian and European candy to retro favourites, sour candy, licorice, chocolate, imported sodas, Canadian classics and whatever else has caught our attention lately.
It's still just us.
We've grown a lot since we opened, but The Sour Moose is still a very small family operation. Most days, the business is run by Christina and her two adult children.
We stock the shelves, hunt down new products, run the store, manage the website, answer your messages, pack online orders and deal with a truly offensive amount of cardboard.
So when we say family-run, we mean it quite literally.
If you come into the shop, message us online or order a box of candy, you're dealing with one of us.
No giant team hiding somewhere in the background. Just our family running a candy store.
Somehow, The Sour Moose gets around.
Our little shop has found its way onto doorsteps all across Canada.
Christina still gets a kick out of orders going to tiny towns and remote communities, probably because she grew up in Northern Ontario and knows exactly what it's like when everything good is approximately three hours away.
The Sour Moose is bigger than it was in 2023, and we've learned a lot along the way. Truthfully, we're still learning. We still occasionally get things wrong, change our minds, try something that doesn't work, and figure out a better way to do it next time.
We're not perfect, and we're not going to pretend we are. We're just trying to build a really good candy store, take care of the people who shop with us, and get a little better at what we do as we go.
What we don't ever want to lose along the way is our personality.
It's a candy store. It's supposed to be fun.
We hear that one a lot. And honestly, that's a pretty big part of why we love doing this.
